Bio

Dr. Angela Makolo is an academic staff in the department of Computer Science, University of Ibadan. Nigeria. She worked in the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) for 14 years in various Information Technology (IT) roles until she resigned in 2009 as the Head of the Software Unit. Dr. Makolo earned M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Ibadan with a specialization in Bioinformatics.

Dr. Makolo completed post-doctoral fellowship at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT, USA under the Empowering the Teachers Fellowship (MIT-ETT) for outstanding young academics in Africa. The MIT-ETT post-doc fellowship provided participants with best practices in pedagogical methods and independent research investigators capable of promoting in-country science and technology research and education capacity. In 2013, Dr. Makolo completed the TechWomen emerging Leader Fellowship to Silicon Valley. Techwomen is an initiative of the United States Department of State 's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. TechWomen empowers, connects and supports the next generation of women leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) from Africa, Central and South Asia, and the Middle East by providing them the access and opportunity needed to advance their careers, pursue their dreams, and inspire women and girls in their communities. After the fellowship, Dr. Makolo established Techmadel, a mentoring platform for girls in STEM.

Dr. Makolo is the Lead for the University of Ibadan Bioinformatics Group. In this capacity she provides leadership roles for funded projects including the University of Ibadan Bioinformatics Group (UIBG) Node of the H3Africa Bioinformatics Network (H3ABioNet) and the TERTIARY EDUCATION TRUST FUND (TETFund). Dr. Makolo ’s areas of specialization includes Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, Machine Learning, Data Science and Software Engineering. She has successfully supervised the two PhD students, who have proceeded to post-doctoral research. She has extensive experience with supervising research projects of postgraduate and undergraduate students. She has disseminated her research in scholarly journals and at professional conferences.
